BELCHERTOWN- PALMER- BRIDGE REPLACEMENT, BR# B-05-002=P-01-001 RIVER STREET OVER THE SWIFT RIVER (CANAL BRIDGE)
The purpose of this project is to replace the River Street Bridge over the Swift River, in the towns of Belchertown and Palmer. The existing bridge is estimated to have been constructed in about 1890 to carry River Street over the Swift River between Belchertown and Palmer. The construction work involves the partial demolition, disassembly, and transportation of the existing pin-connected wrought iron Pratt Pony Truss superstructure to the University of Massachusetts campus located in Amherst. This historic structure will be replaced with new concrete box beam bridge. Work also includes full depth reconstruction of River Street for approximately 140 meters west of the bridge and 40 meters east of the bridge. The total length of the project is approximately 213 meters.
