SPRINGFIELD- BRIDGE PRESERVATION, S-24-032, STATE STREET OVER ROOSEVELT AVENUE
The proposed project consists of the rehabilitation of the bridge carrying State Street over Roosevelt Ave. The bridge was originally designed to carry both vehicular and trolley traffic. The main portion of the bridge supporting the roadway is structurally sound and capable of carrying an HS20 load. The facades of the bridge are the problem area and a potential safety hazard. The utilities (two major gas mains, telephone, and electric) are located in the severely deteriorated sidewalk vaults. These utilities may be compromised with further deterioration. Protective shielding has been installed on this bridge to prevent deteriorated material from into the roadway below. This is only a temporary measure. Upgrades to the barrier system are also necessary.
