AMHERST- HADLEY- NORTHAMPTON- NORWOTTUCK RAIL TRAIL IMPROVEMENTS, FROM DAMON ROAD TO STATIONS ROAD (8.5 MILES)
The project consists of rehabilitating a section of the Norwottuck Rail Trail in the towns of Northampton, Hadley, and Amherst. The project begins at Damon Road in Northampton and extends east through Hadley and ends at Station Road in Amherst. The total length of the project is approximately 8.5 miles.
The work to be done on this project includes rehabilitating the pavement by removing the existing hot mix asphalt pavement and resurfacing it with new pavement. The path will be widened up to 10 feet where possible, with other sections of path resurfaced to the existing width of approximately 8 feet – 4 inches. Bridge deck and wood railing will be replaced on four bridges with minor bridge widening at some bridges. The bridges to be worked on are the bridges over the old Cattle Crossing, Fort River, Southeast Street, and Hop Brook. No work will be done on the bridges over the Connecticut River or Snell Street.
Other work to be done includes construction of a precast concrete boardwalk, sign and pavement marking improvements at street crossings, construction of rest stops and turnaround areas, selective tree removal and tree trimming to improve sight distance, parking lot reconstruction and resurfacing, cleaning drainage swales, erosion control, and other miscellaneous work.
