Project Description:
CHARLEMONT- CULVERT REPLACEMENT, C-05-025, ROUTE 2 OVER HARTWELL BROOK
This project proposes to replace a deteriorating concrete culvert with a new single-span bridge. To satisfy current Massachusetts Stream Crossing Standards, the proposed bridge span will need to be approximately 30 feet (i.e. 3 times wider than the existing 10 foot span) with a curb-to-curb deck width of 32 feet. The proposed design will strive for rural context sensitivity. Under current consideration is the use of a pre-cast concrete three-sided culvert; to allow design of a scour-resistant, natural stream bed bottom. A gabion wall on the east side of the upstream channel will also be repaired. No sidewalks exist at this location, and none are currently proposed. Expedited construction techniques will be considered, and work in the water will be reduced to the extent possible. Signalized, alternating one-way traffic on Route 2 will be maintained during construction.
