WESTWOOD- NORWOOD- RECONSTRUCTION OF CANTON STREET TO UNIVERSITY DRIVE, INCLUDING REHAB OF N-25-032=W-31-018
This project extends along Canton Street for 1.9 miles, between the East Street Rotary and University Avenue in the Town of Westwood, and partially abutting the Town of Norwood. One purpose of this project is to provide traffic calming along the corridor through the reconstruction of strategically placed raised median islands, which will also serve as pedestrian refuge at crosswalk locations. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be accommodated to the maximum extent practicable through the construction of an 8 to 10 foot wide shared-use path along the east side of Canton Street and a 5.5 foot wide sidewalk along the west side. The bridge (N-25-032=W-31-018) carrying Canton Street over the railroad tracks approximately 450 feet north of the University Avenue intersection will be rehabilitated and resurfaced to accommodate the shared-use path. Minor modifications will be made to the existing signalized intersection at University Avenue. This corridor serves as a vital connection between residences, the mixed-use commercial district along University Avenue, and the Route 128/University Park Commuter Rail Station. Pedestrians and cyclists may also use the proposed infrastructure to access the Downey School, which is located approximately ½ mile to the southwest via Downey Street.
