LOWELL- RECONSTRUCTION AND REHABILITATION OF FIVE BRIDGES (ENEL BRIDGES) TIGER GRANT

The project will include the complete replacement of two bridges, repairs to four bridges including new deck, beams and rail replacement for two of these bridges and deck repairs and rail replacement for two of these bridges. In conjunction with the TIGER project, Enel has agreed to replace one bridge at its own expense. The eighth bridge was replaced in 2014 in response to an emergency structural failure. In all cases, the new bridges will provide enhanced pedestrian and bicycle accommodations and will remove posted weight restrictions to allow transit buses, emergency vehicles, and commercial trucks to utilize the crossings. All of the replacement bridges will be designed in partnership with the Lowell National Historical Park and Lowell Historic Board to complement the historic canal system.
