DALTON- RECONSTRUCTION OF DALTON DIVISION ROAD
Dalton Division Road is a 1.6 mile, two-lane bituminous concrete roadway that connects suburban residential areas in southern Pittsfield and Dalton to commercial/industrial areas and regional highways further north. Pavement width averages 30 ft. Pavement condition is generally fair to poor; with the northern and southern termini in somewhat better condition than the central section of the roadway. Project context is suburban low density; with residential (single and multi-family), commercial, and community usage. Within a 1.5 mile radius of the intersection, there are three houses of worship, two local markets, two community parks with ball fields and other recreational venues, one bank, an elementary school, three bus stops, and a community medical plaza with ophthalmology and physical therapy services. The southern with Williams Street and Washington Mountain Rd has a crash rate above the statewide average (17 crashes from 2009-2013) with predominantly PDO crashes and several non-fatal injuries. The roadway segment crash rate is lower than the District-wide average for urban arterials. Bicycle and pedestrian use is evident along the corridor, but there are no sidewalks or bike lanes adjacent to the roadway. The roadway is used regularly by two BRTA routes, but there are no designated bus shelters on this road. The proposed project seeks to reconstruct the roadway (5-11-11-5 w/sidewalks both sides), improve sub-standard vertical curvature, reconstruct the southern intersection to improve safety, and provide improved accommodation for all users.
