EGREMONT- RECONSTRUCTION AND RELATED WORK ON ROUTE 23/41, FROM CREAMERY ROAD TO NORTH UNDERMOUNTAIN ROAD
This project proposes to reconstruct 0.7 miles of State Highway to create a “complete streets” design template in the village center of Egremont. The existing roadway cross-section consists of two travel lanes with variable width shoulders (2-6 ft). Sections of un-connected sidewalk, on both sides of the roadway, are present on the western half of the project. Crosswalks exist at the South Egremont Post Office and the South Egremont School. The current design concept is to reconstruct the roadway to a consistent 32 ft width (5-11-11-5) for bicycle accommodation; and to provide one continuous sidewalk, probably on the north side of the roadway, with improved crossing opportunities to better accommodate pedestrian movements in the village center. Access management techniques may be explored to consolidate access points and turning movements at abutting properties. Existing horizontal and vertical alignment will be evaluated for AASHTO compliance, and improvements proposed accordingly. Some geometric improvements at intersections may also be required. The drainage system will be evaluated and upgraded to current design standards. There are some roadside embankment areas that require slope stabilization measures; these areas will be evaluated and included in the design as well. MUTCD compliant signs and pavement markings will be proposed, and other amenities may be included in the design to enhance bike/ped accommodation in this area.
