| Project Description: |
CHESTERFIELD- RECONSTRUCTION OF NORTH ROAD AND DAMON POND ROAD
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), along with the Town of
Chesterfield proposes a pavement reclamation project that will begin at the intersection of Main
Road (Route 143) with North Road, including all of North Road, and extend northeasterly along
Damon Pond Road, ending at the Goshen/Chesterfield town line, where Damon Pond Road
becomes West Street. The total length of the project is approximately 2.5 miles. The project will
include reclamation of the existing roadway to create a new base course and a new hot mix
asphalt riding surface. The proposed roadway typical cross section is to consist of two 10-foot
lanes with 3-foot shoulders on both sides of the road. The existing roadway width is typically 24-
25 feet on North Road and 22-25 feet on Damon Pond Road. Widening the roadway to a
consistent 26-foot width will provide additional area for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians to
share the road. Included in this project is also the demolition and replacement of bridge no. C-12-
022 (5DV) and a 8.5 foot by 6.5 foot asymmetrical corrugated metal culvert at the outlet of the
Damon Pond dam. Safety improvements to be implemented as part of the project include
shoulder widening, new guardrail, sight distance improvements through clearing where possible
along curves, and new warning signs in accordance with the MUTCD.
