LOWELL- CHURCH STREET 2-WAY CONVERSION
The project's primary focus is the conversion of 0.2 miles of Church Street/Appleton Street (Route 110) to two-way traffic flow in the vicinity of Central Street. Church Street/Appleton Street currently provides for one-way traffic eastbound between Gorham Street/Central Street and Green Street. Middlesex Street and Appleton Street have been converted to two-way traffic from the Lord Overpass to Gorham Street and this project would continue this improvement to relieve vehicular congestion within the project area. Secondary focus is the 0.1 miles of Gorham Street/Central Street between Church Street/Appleton Street and Green Street. The third focus is the interconnection of four traffic signals within the project limits and overall improvement of the pedestrian accommodations throughout the project limits. The project would include addition of bicycle accommodations where feasible throughout the project limits. Three existing traffic signals will be upgraded to provide modern signal equipment, coordination between signals and ADA-compliant pedestrian accommodations. Curbing will be reset along Church Street/Appleton Street and as needed elsewhere throughout the project area and all roadways will be milled and overlaid within the project limits. Signage, lighting and pavement markings will be upgraded or replaced throughout the project limits. Two drainage structures will be relocated to accommodate changes in curblines to tighten radii. Eight drainage structures will be reset with curb replacement. Improved pedestrian accommodations at the intersections of Church Street and Green Street with George Street will include landscaping at the existing island area.
