Project Description:
PEABODY- INDEPENDENCE GREENWAY EXTENSION
The proposed Independence Greenway Extension is intended to continue the existing Greenway further eastwards from its present eastern terminus at the North Shore Mall to the Warren Street Extension/Endicott Street intersection in central Peabody. This will extend the Greenway by 7000 feet (1.3 miles). The Greenway Extension will mostly be constructed on an abandoned Boston and Maine Railroad right-of-way along Proctor Brook. The only location where there will be an at-grade crossing of a public road is on the North Shore Road, either at its intersection with the North Shore Mall Driveway, or at the former railroad right-of-way across the road. The existing driveway/North Shore Road intersection signal will be adjusted to accommodate bicycle/pedestrian crossings. The proposed path will provide a 10’- 0” wide two-lane two-way bikeway with 2’- 0” wide shoulders on each side. Where the proposed Greenway Extension runs along Proctor Brook, the waterway’s meandering course crosses under the former track centerline at three locations. New concrete box culverts will be installed at two of these locations, while at bridge crossing for the trail will be needed at the easternmost brook crossing near the City powerplant facility. The bridge will be approximately 80 feet long and will carry a 10’- 0” wide two lane two-way bikeway with 1’- 0” wide shoulders on each side. All stream crossings will meet the Massachusetts Stream Crossing Standards to the best extent practicable.
