HOLDEN- PAVEMENT REHABILITATION ON MAIN STREET, SHREWSBURY STREET AND DOYLE ROAD, FROM STATE POLICE BARRACKS TO BRATTLE STREET
The project limits are Shrewsbury St from the State Police barracks to Doyle Rd and Doyle Rd from Shrewsbury St to Brattle St. The total length of the project is approximately 1.04 miles. Shrewsbury St is a main thoroughfare and it is also the primary access/evacuation route to the City of Worcester and Interstate I-190. The section of Shrewsbury St from Main St to Chapel St has sidewalk on one side only, the north side. The sidewalk network near Main St ends at the driveway of the Bank of America, leaving approx. 370-ft of roadway with no pedestrian connectivity to Main St. There is a culvert/bridge located between the Rite Aid plaza and South Wachusett St which has sidewalk only on the north side. At the intersection with Chapel St/Holden St, the pedestrian ramps are not ADA compliant and the pedestrian islands are too narrow. The section of Shrewsbury St from Chapel St to Doyle Rd has sidewalks on both sides, however the sidewalks are approximately 4-ft wide with no buffer between the curb and the sidewalks. Shrewsbury St is a walking route to school for students of the Mountview Middle School. Students commute by foot and bicycle from South Wachusett St to the east and Bullard St to the west. The traffic signal equipment at the Shrewsbury St intersections at Chapel St / Holden St and Doyle Rd were installed in 1978 with no upgrades to date. The current roadway layout within the project limits provides narrow shoulders and no bicycle accommodations. This project proposes a Complete Streets design for both Shrewsbury St and Doyle Rd, which include: installing a 5-ft sidewalk on each side of the roadway, 5-ft shoulders for bike lanes on each side, and 11-ft travel lanes; upgrading the traffic signals and pedestrian crossings at each of the Shrewsbury St intersections at Chapel/Holden St and at Doyle Rd and upgrading the intersection at Doyle Rd/Brattle St. The proposed improvements include full-depth pavement rehabilitation, roadway stripping, new cement concrete ADA compliant ramps, new cement concrete sidewalks with granite curb, signalized 4-way intersection with pedestrian crossing actuation, 4-leg roundabout, traffic signs, new driveway aprons, and new cement concrete walk with berm and grass strip.
