BILLERICA- INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS AT BOSTON ROAD (ROUTE 3A), LEXINGTON STREET AND GLAD VALLEY ROAD
The Boston Road (Route 3A) at Lexington Road and Glad Valley Drive intersection improvements include the installation of a traffic signal and realignment of both Lexington Road and Glad Valley Drive. Lexington Road will be realigned to form a more conventional three-legged signalized intersection at Boston Road. Glad Valley Drive will also be realigned to meet Boston Road in a similar three legged signalized intersection, with both realigned intersections operating under one controller. This traffic signal reconfiguration will improve safety and operations for this curved section of Boston Road.
In addition, the segment of Lexington Road which currently connects to Glad Valley Drive will be removed under the geometric changes of this project, eliminating unnecessary conflict points. The project will also extend past the intersection along Boston Road, north of the intersection to the intersection with Tufts Lane, and approximately 500 feet south of Lexington Road. Sidewalks will be constructed along both sides of Boston Road within the project limits. The proposed sidewalk along the west side of Boston Road will meet the existing sidewalk at the Commons at Boston Road Driveway, resulting in a continuous sidewalk from Lexington Road and Glad Valley Drive to Billerica's Town Center. Sidewalk will also be provided on both sides of Glad Valley Drive to the project limit and on the north side of Lexington Road to the project limit. Shoulders accommodating bicycles will be provided on both sides of Boston Road. The existing closed drainage system will also be modified to meet with the proposed roadway design to capture and treat stormwater runoff.
In total, the project will reconstruct approximately 2200 feet of Boston Road, 150 feet of Glad Valley Drive, and 250 feet of Lexington Road. The current typical pavement width of the corridor is 45 feet within a 80 foot Right of way. The proposed typical section would be a 5-foot sidewalk, a 5-foot shoulder and a 12-foot lane on both sides for a total of 44 feet along the corridor. Within the intersections, travel lanes would narrow to 11 feet for the through movements and provide 10 foot left-turn and right-turn lanes to both Lexington Road and Glad Valley Drive for a total pavement width of 56 feet.
