Project Description: |
FITCHBURG- TWIN CITIES RAIL TRAIL CONSTRUCTION (PHASE II)
This project is to provide safer and improved transportation access for bicycle users and pedestrians between the Cities of Leominster and Fitchburg and to provide a safe connection to the MART Intermodal Transportation Center in downtown Fitchburg. As envisioned, this regional trail will connect areas of cultural, economic, social, and natural significance along the multi community corridor and provide a non-motorized transportation and recreational alternative for people of all ages and abilities. Phase 2 of the TCRT project will complete the trail in Fitchburg, by connecting the end of the current trail constructed under Phase 1 at 4th Street and continuing to the multi-modal station in downtown Fitchburg. The connection includes an on-road section along Railroad Street to approximately 1st Street, where the trail will climb a retained earth structure leading to a bridge over the MBTA Commuter Line railroad tracks, across property owned by Unitil, across the North Nashua River, and over private property to the MART property on an elevated structure. Related work includes installation of signage, pavement markings and bike path amenities.
