SPRINGFIELD- RECONSTRUCTION OF BIRNIE AVENUE AT GERENA SCHOOL PEDESTRIAN TUNNEL
The purpose of the project is to provide roadway improvements along Birnie Avenue in the vicinity of the German Gerena Community School. The improvements required are both to rehabilitate the deteriorated roadway and sidewalk structures as well as to implement traffic calming measures to reduce traffic speeds along the corridor. The improvements include reconstruction / resurfacing of approximately 300 linear feet of Birnie Avenue, replacement of the existing curbing and guardrail, sidewalk reconstruction and installation of a new speed table to control vehicular speeds. New roadway drainage structures catch basins and reinforced concrete pipes will also be installed.
The project also includes rehabilitation of an existing roadway bridge carrying Birnie Avenue over a pedestrian tunnel connecting to the Gerena School. The existing bridge / tunnel has been subject to unwanted water infiltration for years and exhibits signs of associated deterioration. The project scope includes concrete repairs, installation of new waterproofing membrane over the bridge deck and the rear faces of the abutments, and installation of pump structures behind each abutment to remove groundwater from the vicinity of the bridge.
