LOWELL- BRIDGE PRESERVATION/REHABILITATION OF L-15-033, L-15-044, L-15-042 AND BRIDGE REPLACEMENT OF SWAMP LOCKS BRIDGE OVER LOWER PAWTUCKET CANAL

This project will consist of bridge preservation work at three locations and a pedestrian bridge replacement at a fourth location in Lowell. The Broadway Street bridge over the Western Canal will undergo preservation of its 92’ historic stone arch bridge. The stone substructure will be repaired, chinked, or replaced. The sidewalks, bridge rail, and pedestrian railings will be reconstructed. Construction activities include Mobilization, Traffic Control, Excavation, Sidewalk, Stone Arch Repair, Roadway Approaches, and Mill and Overlay. The Market Street bridge over the Merrimack Canal will undergo rehabilitation of existing 40’ bridge. The substructure beams that control the weight restrictions will be addressed. The bridge deck will be reconstructed, including new full depth pavement, sidewalks, bridge rail, and pedestrian railings. Existing utility crossings will be maintained. Construction activities include Mobilization, Traffic Control, Demolition, Deck Reconstruction, Full Depth Pavement, Sidewalk, and Roadway Approaches. The Lawrence Street bridge over the River Meadow Brook will undergo rehabilitation of its existing 121’ concrete slab bridge. The concrete substructure will be repaired. The bridge deck will be reconstructed, including mill and overlay, sidewalks, bridge rail, and pedestrian railings. Construction activities include Mobilization, Traffic Control, Concrete Culvert Repair, Sidewalk, and Roadway Approaches. The Swamp Locks bridge over the Lower Pawtucket Canal is slated for removal of its existing 125’ bridge in favor of replacement with a pedestrian-only bridge. The existing structure will be replaced with a single span prefabricated slab-girder pedestrian bridge. Construction activities include Mobilization, Demolition, Construction, Sidewalk, and Approaches.
